In Europe, spatial information is characterised by lack of harmonisation between datasets at different geographical scales, fragmented datasets and diverse sources, gaps in availability and duplication of information.
The GIS4EU project aim is to model and test an infrastructure to share cartographic data and feature layers, in order to make them more accessible, and to share the information more easily. This is to be accomplished without building a central database, rather by sharing information and data through standard services. The project will provide base cartography datasets for Europe on the following themes:
- Administrative units
- Hydrography
- Transportation networks
- Elevation themes (terrestrial, bathymetry and shoreline)
Therefore, the GIS4EU project intends to develop a common data model and support tools for the assessment of common standards, to enable access to consistent and homogeneous reference data provided by cartographic authorities of different countries and levels (national, regional and local), using the INSPIRE models and according to the requirements of the INSPIRE Directive (2007/2/EC).
GIS4EU project is formed by more than 25 different partners covering almost the entire Europe and representing all types of actors - researchers, data providers, technicians and end users . All partners have a particular experience and, through the knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary work, they can face in-depth the complex technical aspects related to the operational implementation of the INSPIRE Directive. GIS4EU project represents in fact the first step to overcome complex and difficult data integration of different practices on an European scale.
The final results, developed with the collaboration of all necessary actors involved in developing a GSDI, will provide results from a series of real cases and will develop operational and practical instructions for implementing the INSPIRE Directive.
All types of European GI, Environmental and Risk Agencies managing maps, cadastres, infrastructures and environmental themes will greatly benefit from GIS4EU results.
